In an ever-changing world, good news can seem hard to come by. You certainly don’t expect a credit card company to make your day. But American Express has thrown the gauntlet into the credit card industry by announcing a significant list of user-friendly changes to the way their rewards categories are structured.

In light of how COVID-19 has changed our spending habits, AMEX has adjusted income rates in several key categories and changed how credits can be spent across all of their rewards card lines. They even announced new credits that reflect our new containment behaviors.

While the entire list of changes is positive, each card has its own characteristics. American Express calls these new benefits a “value injection,” and it’s easy to see why.

As a general statement, monthly credits will NOT renew, so they are best used on items billed monthly. To see the fine print, see American Express Terms and Conditions. Let’s take a look at them one by one to make sure you’re getting the most out of your plastic.
