A show about the insanely rich feuds for power may seem like a hard sell in an age of precipitous income inequality, but think about it: what if that was also really funny? While HBO Succession is technically a drama, it excels most like a farce. In the spectacle, wealth and those who possess it are not particularly exceptional. In fact, they’re often idiots – and I can’t wait to catch up with them all in Season 3.
For the uninitiated, Succession is a series about what happens when Logan Roy, the powerful CEO of media conglomerate WayStar (think of him as a guy Rupert Murdoch and WayStar as Fox News Corp.) is about to announce his retirement – then changes his mind. notice, throwing the power of his family plunges into disarray. There are palace plots, double crossings and a lot of very inventive swear words, all culminating in the season two finale where (spoiler!) Kendall Roy, Logan’s favorite son at the start of the series before a brutal downfall from Grace, decides to turn against his father and accuse him of financial crimes, instead of taking the fall as planned.
In the trailer for the new season, that naturally leads to war, as the already nervous Roy family are now the subject of a criminal investigation that can put them all in jail, instead of just one.
Also, Tom Wamsgams (Matthew Macfadyen) tells cousin Greg (Nicholas Braun) that someone is going to “shoot a million poisonous spiders on your dick” which is honestly the kind of thing I come to this show for. . Also memes are good.
Succession Season 3 premieres this fall on HBO.
